Textual Analysis

All Time Low - A Love Like War (Featuring Vic Fuentes)

Conventions Of Genre:
This video is mainly all performance based with some little none performance narrative going on but only very little. Because this is a mainly performance based video you would expect to see instruments such as drums, guitars, mics and obviously the band play. In this song though the featured artist is from another band and he is in the video something that you would expect to see but not always. The band are wearing stereotypical "cool" clothing with things like skinny jeans, leather jackets etc.

Use of Cinematography:
All the way throughout this video is tracking towards the right constantly going from one shot to another or one scene to another you could say. This is an interesting technique which isn't used very often especially by rock bands. This way you feel like you are following the action everywhere you going and then being shown whats going on in the next shot you can't wait for it to appear.

Use Of Editing:
There is a lot of montage editing all the way throughout this video which is what most music videos use, there are two narratives there, one being the performance element and the other is the band just hanging out in the cinema or theatre. Also with the camera constantly tracking to the right there is a lot of times were the shot fades to black as it's passing through to the next shot.

Audience:
The audience for this particular video would be mainly fans of the band All Time Low, fans of Rock music aged anywhere between 13-50 or even fans of Vic Fuentes who features on the songs band Pierce The Veil.  They could be targeted at both boys and girls as both sex like this type of music.

Ideology:
Because the video is mainly performance based it's hard to find what the ideology is but for me it would be to have a good time hanging out with your friends as that it is what they are doing in this video when they aren't performing and even when they are performing they have smiles on their faces so you know they're having a good time.

Representation:
You could link Tim O'Sullivan to the represent  this music as he says that all media texts tell stories about ourselves, not always our own personal stories but stories of us as a culture which everyone goes through friendships and how important they are so therefore we can relate to them.

You Me At Six - No One Does It Better

Conventions Of Genre:
There is some performance with one of the narratives however not as much as you would expect from a rock video. The other narrative is groups of people, friends or maybe girlfriend and boyfriends hanging out both young and old showing how important relationships are.The band are wearing stereotypical "cool" clothing with things like skinny jeans, leather jackets, sun glasses etc.

Use Of Cinematography:
There are a lot of close up shots throughout the video of first of all the band and second with the extras in the video. This could represent an up close and personal atmosphere to the song or that the song is very personal to the band as it is clearly a love song being called "No One Does It Better." The close ups in the performance scenes could be showing an up close and personal aspect of the band which maybe you wouldn't see before especially at one of their live gigs. There are a lot of long shots which show the togetherness of both the band and the extras in the narrative. This shows how close the people within the video are and that the band want to be seen as a band and not individuals. The establishing shot however is a long shot at quite a high angle where you can see an American petrol station and the desert almost in the background with the band approaching in a car from the distance this could show that the band are coming for you when you least expect it and with this song you might not expect a chilled out love song from a band like You Me At Six. Also the last shot of the video is a long shot at a high angle showing the repetition of the video also meaning that we are now back where we started which could be the same for when you finish a relationship. You are back to the start of it all before you'd met that person. There is a depth of field shot that appears throughout the video of bars been in the foreground and the band or actors in the background. This represents that they are trapped, trapped by addiction in the narrative because it looks like a counselling meeting or the band may be trapped in this world of music which they can't get out of even for a little while.

Use of Editing:
There is a lot of montage editing all the way throughout this video which is what most music videos use, there are two narratives there however neither of them match up and are relative to each other. There is also cuts on the beat which shows there is first of all a rhythm to the song and a rhythm to the video in it's message one which we can all follow in that relationships are very important. There are some slow motion shots in the video which are slowing the pace of the song down or even reflecting the theme of love were sometimes you have to slow down and take a step back and think to yourself about the relationship you're in for better or for worse.

Audience:
The audience for this particular video would be mainly fans of the band You Me At Six or fans of Rock music aged anywhere between 13-50. They could be targeted at both boys and girls as both sex like this type of music. You could also say that any class could also like this music, working class or middle class even upper class can relate to it as they are talking about growing up, having a good time and talking about relationships which is something we can all relate to.

Ideology:
The ideology for this video is about being in relationships whether it be friends or girlfriend and boyfriend, this is shown by the different groups of friends hanging out together and having a laugh. The song also has very positive connotations as it is clearly a positive message, no one does it better than you, you're number one clearly talking about his girlfriend. But this positive atmosphere is reflected by the setting of the video it's bright and sunny rather than rain and dark for a song that was negative. Another theme of the song is emptiness. This is shown by the extreme long shots where all you can see is the vast landscape and a few people in the foreground. This could also be represented in the narrative were it looks like a counselling session for addiction which in itself could be another theme of the song. But the emptiness of the scene could be shown through the close ups of hugs and extreme close ups of hands and faces showing the emotion on the actors faces. They don't have much going on in their lives but come to this session to get something back in their lives. This could be something the band where feeling at the time.

Representation:
You could link Tim O'Sullivan to the represent  this music as he says that all media texts tell stories about ourselves, not always our own personal stories but stories of us as a culture which everyone goes through relationships whether it be friends or girlfriends so we can therefore relate to it. A lot of people can go through emptiness and relate to the video through that, they will also see the positive connotations of the video and think yeah I can get through this.

Kids In Glass Houses - Peace

Conventions Of Genre:
The band are playing in one of the narratives while there is a story line in the other which is typical of a modern music video. Therefore you would expect to see instruments and the band playing also the band are wearing stereotypical "cool" clothing with things like skinny jeans, leather jackets etc.

Use Of Cinematography:
There are a lot of close ups of the band and their instruments showing that you can be up close and personal to them in the video rather than been far away from them at their gigs. Also you get a lot of long shots which show the whole band playing which shows that each band member is equal rather than one member taking all the glory which some videos tend to do. When the band are playing there is never any low or high angle shots which shows that we are just the same as them, they're just normal lads like us.

Use of Editing:
There are a lot fast cuts in this video which shows the fast life that the people within the narrative may have but also the fast life that the band have at this moment in time with a new album coming out that they are getting ready to tour the world and not stopping for a break.

Audience:
The audience for this particular video would be mainly fans of the band Kids In Glass Houses or fans of Rock music aged anywhere between 13-50. They could be targeted at both boys and girls as both sex like this type of music. You could also say that any class could also like this music, working class or middle class even upper class can relate to it as they are talking about growing up and having a good time however I do think working class kids can relate to it more as in the video they are stealing from shops and hanging out at a caravan.

Ideology:
The ideology for this video is about being young and having a good time as they are hanging out as friends doing things that young kids do. However it also talks about love and relationships and how complicated they can be which is something the majority of young people can relate to and can put themselves in that scenario.

Representation:
You could link Tim O'Sullivan to the represent  this music as he says that all media texts tell stories about ourselves, not always our own personal stories but stories of us as a culture which everyone goes through relationships whether it be friends or girlfriends so we can therefore relate to it. You could also say that this video goes against Tessa Perkins' idea of stereotypes in that normally men are stereotypes as players in that they have more than one girl at a time but in this video it is the girl who is the 'player' as she has two lads chasing after her something which you wouldn't really expect.

The mise en scene of this video is full of musical instruments as there is a performance element throughout this video. So this like microphones, guitars, amps and drums are featured. This is typical of a rock video as you would expect to see a performance in the video which is something I will use in my video. With the narrative element of the video there are three main protagonists who are all wearing stereotypical 'cool' clothes as well as the band so things like leather jackets, denim jackets, skinny jeans, hats and caps and hoodies. I will take this kind of thing in mind when shooting my video and choosing my costumes for the actors in both the performance scene and narrative.

Also towards the end of the video in the narrative they are throwing old TV's's around and setting fire to them this could represent that the band are getting rid of their old image and in with the new sound. It also links back to the start of the video were there is some non dietetic sound of one of the protagonists flicking a lighter obviously linking to the fire at the end of the video. In terms of cinematography there is a lot of close ups of the band which gives you an up close and personal feel to them which may be something you might not get at one of their live gigs. Also you have some extreme long shots which capture all of the band to show the togetherness of them, they are all equal as they are all in the shot. There is a particular shot that goes from a long shot to a close up with a very fast cut which is pulling you in to the performance to give you that close and personal feel once again after been so far away from the action.

During the performance there is a lot of movement with the camera, this creates action and excitement rather than just been a camera on a tripod there is movement around the band and it makes it feel like a real performance. In the narrative there are a few depth of field shots which could mean that we have to look out for something hidden in the distance or in the background maybe. This could be to do with the band or music videos from the band in the future.

With editing there are a lot of fast cuts which edit to the pace of the song to keep up with the high tempo of the track. This makes it makes it better for the audience to watch as there is a lot of action throughout the video while a video with shots lasting along time is going to be boring, dull and not entertaining.

The song also cuts between both the narrative and the performance scenes which is typical of the rock music genre, there is equal time on both as the band obviously want to feature to promote them but they also want a good story line to go with it. As for sound there is some non diegetic sound at the start of the video where one of the main protagonists is flicking a lighter which links to the end of the video where the protagonists are setting fire to old TV's and junk. This then means that the video starts at the end and doesn't follow the linear form and is therefore breaking conventions however is therefore in a montage style of editing.
